Read Against the Grain to discover how farmers around the world are transforming agriculture to heal the planet and nourish communities.

Learn about regenerative farming practices and the inspiring stories behind the movement.

In a world grappling with climate change, food insecurity, and environmental degradation, a group of farmers is quietly revolutionizing agriculture.

Against the Grain by Roger Thurow sheds light on these inspiring individuals who, against all odds, are transforming their lands and communities through regenerative farming practices.

A New Paradigm

Traditional agriculture, often reliant on chemical fertilizers and intensive tillage, has led to soil degradation, water pollution, and loss of biodiversity.

In contrast, regenerative agriculture focuses on restoring soil health, improving water cycles, and increasing biodiversity.

By working with nature, rather than against it, these farmers are creating resilient and sustainable food systems.

Real-World Impact

The farmers profiled in Against the Grain are demonstrating the power of regenerative agriculture to address a wide range of challenges:

  • Increased Soil Health: By building soil organic matter, these farmers are improving water retention, nutrient availability, and resistance to erosion.
  • Enhanced Biodiversity: Regenerative practices create diverse ecosystems that support a wide range of plants, animals, and microorganisms.
  • Climate Change Mitigation: Healthy soils can help to mitigate climate change.
  • Improved Food Security: Regenerative agriculture can increase yields, improve food quality, and enhance resilience to change.
  • Economic Benefits: By reducing costs and increasing productivity, regenerative farming can improve farmers’ livelihoods.

A New Hope

Against the Grain is a powerful reminder that we have the tools and knowledge to create a more sustainable and equitable food system.

By supporting regenerative agriculture, we can nourish our planet and ensure a thriving future for generations to come.

How Farmers Around the Globe Are Transforming Agriculture to Nourish the World and Heal the Planet

Synopsis

When famine, drought, and malnutrition plagued their communities, these farmers tried something revolutionary–and managed to nourish their families and their land in the process.

Farmers in some of the world’s oldest agricultural areas–Africa’s Great Rift Valley, India’s Indo-Gangetic Plain, the Highlands of Central America, and the Great Plains of the U.S.–were toiling year after year, only to find that modern industrial agriculture was turning on itself.

The very practices that they were using to grow food yesterday were making it more difficult to grow food today.

But some of these farmers took a gamble and changed their practices to work with nature rather than bending nature to their will.

They terraced the land to catch more rainwater and prevent soil runoff; they planted a diverse range of vegetables that would balance the nutrients in the soil; they replaced commercial fertilizers with organic matter from their own farms; they planted more trees and drought-resistant grains; and, perhaps most importantly, they taught their communities by example that these regenerative farming methods paid off–both in nourishing their families and in bringing their land back to life.
