Is My Mexican Bretzel documentary or fiction? Either way, the film by Nuria Gimenez is mesmerizing from start to finish.

The film footage is real.

However, the story it tells is not absolute truth and we may not ever know where the lines between reality and fiction are.

When the director’s grandfather passed away, she travelled to his home where she discovered 50 16mm film reals in his basement.

She wasn’t sure what she’d find, but knew she needed to take them home with her.

Fortunately, those old film reels were well preserved, so she was able to digitize them.

As she watched them over and over again, she formulated a plan as to how they would fit together as a story.

My Mexican Bretzel

Indiepix
Not Rated
Release Date 4/13/21

Synopsis

The film uses home movies and fleeting snippets of sound to tell the story of Vivian Barrett, a wealthy Swiss woman.

Her WWII pilot-turned-entrepreneur husband changes their lives when he creates a pharmaceutical wonder drug.

From the 40s through 60s, from Le Mans to New York to Hawaïi, vulnerability, loss, truth, and opulence are explored in a way that only cinema allows.
