🛝 Inclusive Engineering & Incline Ramps: My Review of Ramp It Up

Teaching children how to use scientific thinking to solve everyday real-world problems is one of the most rewarding parts of sharing STEM stories together.

When a picture book seamlessly blends foundational physics concepts with empathy, inclusion, and creative play, it quickly becomes a favorite.

As someone who loves doing hands-on learning activities and sharing educational books with my grandkids, finding titles that empower kids to be compassionate problem solvers is such a joy.

That is why Ramp It Up (and its Spanish counterpart, Eleva La Rampa) immediately won my heart!

Published by Charlesbridge in a beautiful hardcover format as part of their acclaimed STEAMworks series, this story highlights how engineering and accessibility go hand in hand.

📐 Problem Solving, Accessibility & Cute Illustrations

The story centers around a relatable, playful scenario that instantly hooks young readers:

  • A Fun, Purposeful Challenge: Zoe is throwing a rooftop pool party for her toys, but realizes her wheeled toys can’t reach the roof! Knowing firsthand how important accessibility is, she gets to work designing a safe solution so everyone can join the fun.
  • Exploring Ramps & Inclined Planes: Through trial, error, and inspiration from the real-world ramp at her own house, Zoe tests out ideas and learns how slopes and ramps make elevation changes easy.
  • Charming Artwork & Expert Back Matter: The cute, colorful illustrations enhance every step of Zoe’s project. Plus, the book includes educational back matter packed with extra facts about physics tools and hands-on STEAM activities to try at home!

🌐 Recommended Ages: 4 to 7 (Great for Second-Language Learners!)

The publisher recommends this book for ages 4 to 7, which is spot-on for preschoolers through early elementary students exploring foundational STEM.

However, because Charlesbridge offers the exact same wonderful story in both English (Ramp It Up) and Spanish (Eleva La Rampa), the age range easily extends to older kids who are practicing their reading in a second language!

After some trial & error and a trip outside to look at her own ramp for inspiration, Zoe and the toys are ready to ramp up the fun!
