Modern Drama Film from Ghana

African Diaspora

ghananian woman and man

Nakom is a fascinating drama that explores the complexities of African diaspora, when a gifted student returns home to a village in Ghana.

His dreams of becoming a doctor are very different than what is waiting for him at home.

Change can be hard for any young person, but the cultural difference between his past and future are vast.

Difficult decisions must be made, but, of course, there are no easy answers.

The film has subtitles, so is best for teens and adults who will be able to follow along with the story.

I enjoyed the film and understand why it has been honored with numerous awards.

Synopsis

Set in present day Ghana, Nakom follows Iddrisu, a talented medical student who goes home after his father’s sudden death.

Iddrisu reluctantly returns home to the village and temporarily assumes the head of the impoverished household and farm.

He inherits not only the delicate task of planting a successful crop but also a large debt that could destroy the family.

Attempting to maintain part of his studies from the confines of a small hut, he becomes increasingly frustrated.

Everything is overwhelming, the incessant physical and emotional needs of those around him, the demanding toil of the land and lack of rain.

A contentious relationship with his uncle, to whom the sizeable debt is owed, is further complicated by the unplanned pregnancy of the uncle’s granddaughter.

As the new patriarch grapples with tradition and familial duty, he is met with varying shades of contempt by both family and villagers.

As circumstances swell, he begins to realize that no future for him exists in the place where he is needed the most.
