Wow! Girl Rising is an amazing documentary that has touched me deeply. It acknowledges the horrible adversity that people face in other parts of the world and gives hope for the future. Change is not easy, but it is most definitely possible.
Girl Rising takes us on a trip to 9 developing countries – Haiti, Afghanistan, India, Cambodia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Nepal, Sierra Leone and Peru. We get to meet girls who have overcome odds that seemed insurmountable – odds that really make our #FirstWorldProblems look shameful.
The girls have strength, hope and determination. The one factor that turned their lives around was education. Here in the US, we just assume that girls will have access to an education, but that isn’t true in many parts of the world and it is the path to better lives for them and future generations. In fact, an educated girl can help lift her family and community out of their current poverty in just one generation.
The cost of educating a girl in a developing country is minimal by our standards, but this is the key that can help solve the world crisis of poverty and all that goes along with it.
Girl Rising is an excellent documentary. It’s great to watch at home and is also ideal for sharing with others in the classroom or at church or other community groups.
