Kindness Rocks Craft

February 17th is National Random Acts of Kindness Day, and this is a holiday that I can get behind! We celebrated a little early with family movie night and a kindness rocks craft activity.

The movie for the night was Same Kind of Different As Me , which is based on the best selling book of the same name. Kindness is a theme of the story, so the craft was a perfect fit!

Kindness rocks are meant to be inspirational. You might need one for yourself or you can give one to a friend or even a stranger who would benefit from a kind act.

The craft is great for kids and adults. Some may choose to write inspirational words on the rocks, but I chose simple images designed to make people smile. I think of peace, love and happiness, when I look at my rocks.

Supply List

  • Smooth Rocks
  • Sponge Paint Brushes
  • Colorful Acrylic Paint
  • Paint Pens
  • Mod Podge

Smooth, clean rocks

Smooth rocks work best, but they don’t need to be perfectly smooth. My rocks had bumps and some rough edges that gave the finished product character.

Base Coat

The first step is to give each rock a base coat of paint. The sponge applicator brush makes it easy to get it done quickly, even if you aren’t crafty.

Anything goes with kindness rocks, so each person can let their creativity shine.

Let the base coat dry

The base coat should be completely dry before you start adding your design. You may want to paint the base before the movie and then finish the project after the movie is done.

Paint Pens

Artistro paint pens are easy to use. The medium tip pens worked well for my designs, but you may want a fine tip to write words on your rocks.

Here are some ideas, if you’d like to add words to your rocks:

  • You are loved
  • Accentuate the positive
  • Hope
  • May peace be with you

Paint your designs & seal with Mod Podge

Once your painting is complete, coat each rock with Mod Podge to seal. Then, your rocks are ready to make someone smile!
