Alice Piper Speaks Up Review: Inspiring California History Years Before Brown v. Board of Education
One of the greatest joys of exploring new books is discovering the incredible, real-life heroes whose stories may not be featured in history textbooks.
As someone who has lived in California my entire life, I have driven up Highway 395 and passed through the beautiful, quiet town of Big Pine in Inyo County more times than I can count.
Yet, I was unfamiliar with the impactful story of this teenager, until I picked up Alice Piper Speaks Up.
This beautiful hardcover book introduces young readers to a young hero who stood up for her right to an education, paving the way for monumental civil rights progress right here in our home state.
It is a wonderful book that can be as educational for adults as it is for children.
⚖️ A Landmark Victory Decades Before Brown v. Board
In 1924, long before the national civil rights milestones of the 1950s and 60s made headlines, fifteen-year-old Alice Piper stood up to injustice.
As a member of the Big Pine Paiute Tribe, Alice was barred from attending her local public high school simply because of her Native American heritage.
Rather than backing down, Alice chose to speak up.
She sued the local school district, and her historic case went all the way to the California Supreme Court.
In a monumental, unanimous decision, she won.
This landmark ruling declared that public schools could not exclude Native American children if there was no separate federal school available locally.
This established a legal precedent for integration thirty years before Brown v. Board of Education.
Today, Alice Piper Day is celebrated each year on June 2nd to honor her legacy.
📚 The Perfect Reading Level for Budding Historians
The publisher’s recommended age range of 8 to 12 years old is a spot-on guide for this biography.
Its vocabulary and narrative arc are good for students who are starting to learn about civil rights, legal systems, and American history.
The hardcover features engaging layouts and historical context clues, so 1920s rural California comes vividly to life.
Alice teaches children that you are never too young to possess an inner compass of strength and change the course of history for the better.

Synopsis
Alice Piper just wanted to go to public school.
The year was 1923, and Alice, a Native Nuwuvi (Paiute) teenager in California, dreamed about learning from teachers, making new friends, and being respected for who she was.
So when the school board refused to let her and six other Native students attend, she decided to speak up, and she sued for her right to an equal education.
Alice Piper Speaks Up, the first book dedicated to this major champion of civil rights, features new research into Alice’s life and court case.
Each chapter begins with lyrical verse and full-color illustrations that invite readers into Alice’s story.
The text connects Alice’s case to larger themes about education, Native rights, and movements for school desegregation across the United States.
The third book in Heyday’s widely acclaimed Fighting for Justice series, the book shows how one teen’s action resonates throughout America’s history, even now.
