History of Juneteenth

Juneteenth is a holiday that celebrates the end of slavery in the United States.

It is also known as Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, and Jubilee Day.

Juneteenth commemorates the day when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, and announced that the Civil War had ended and that all enslaved people in Texas were free.

This news came two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared that all enslaved people in the Confederate states were free.

The arrival of the Union soldiers in Galveston marked the end of slavery in Texas, but it did not end the struggle for freedom and equality for African Americans.

In the years since Juneteenth, African Americans have continued to fight for their rights, and they have made great progress.

However, there is still more work to be done.

The holiday is a reminder of the progress that has been made, and it is a call to action to continue fighting for freedom and equality for all.

Juneteenth as a Federal Holiday

Juneteenth became a federal holiday in the United States on June 17, 2021.

This was a historic moment, and it is a testament to the hard work and dedication of many people who have fought for this recognition.

Juneteenth is a day to celebrate the end of slavery, but it is also a day to reflect on the work that still needs to be done to achieve true equality for all.
