How to Make Beaded Pink Grapefruit Hoop Earrings

DIY beaded pink grapefruit hoop earrings are easy to make with colorful polymer clay citrus fruit beads and flat heishi beads.

The brightly colored hoops are fun to make and even more fun to wear.

They are the perfect accessory to wear for brunch or even for working in the garden.

No special tools or skills are needed, so even an absolute beginning to jewelry making can create their own bead hoop earrings.

Colorful Polymer Clay Heishi Beads

The bright pink heishi beads used for these citrus earrings are bold and beautiful.

Traditional heishi (pronounced hee-shee) beads are formed from a clay made from ground up shell or stone powder.

Today the term is used for a variety of flat disc shaped beads.

The most common type of heishi beads used for DIY jewelry crafts are made from polymer clay and come in a wide variety of colors.

They can be purchased as strands of beads, packages of loose beads and boxed jewelry making kits with beads organized by color.

Typical size of the beads is 6mm wide by 1mm thick with a hole that is 2mm in diameter.

These vivid pink heishi beads look beautiful when they are next to the pink grapefruit beads.

Of course, you are welcome to use a different color of heishi beads, if you’d like.

Polymer Fruit Beads

Fruit shaped beads made from polymer clay look great and are also easy to use.

The pink grapefruit beads have nice detail and the pink insides contrast nicely with the yellow peel of the fruit.

Other citrus beads include sliced oranges, lemons, limes, yellow grapefruit, mandarins and others in beautiful bright colors.

They are sturdy beads that will wear well, but they aren’t too heavy.

Holes are already drilled in the fruit beads going side to side, so they are ready to use.

You’ll be able to slip your thread right through without using a needle.

Choose a pack of beads with just the one kind of citrus fruit or get a multi pack that includes many different types of fruit.

Hoop Earrings for Jewelry Making

Earring beading hoops are readily available in a variety of sizes and finishes at very reasonable prices.

You can get a package that includes all the same size and shape hoops or an assorted multipack that you can use to make a lot of fun hoop earrings.

For this pair of fruit earrings I used round 1.2″ silver tone hoops, since that is a good size for me and many others – not too big and not too small.

You are welcome to use whatever size works for you.

If you are using bigger hoops, you may want to add more heishi beads than I did for the 1.2″ hoops.

Polymer clay beads are light, but if you are adding more than I did on a larger hoop make sure the earrings will still be comfortable for you.

If you want to use smaller hoops, make sure the hoops are still big enough to accommodate the pink grapefruit bead.
