Award Winning Drama about Bullying

feature playground movie image

Playground is a somber film about bullying that will touch hearts and push adults to take action to protect children from harm.

Bullying is not a ‘harmless right of passage’ that children need to ‘rise above’ and ignore.

In this heartfelt film, we see it all from a child’s perspective.

It damages the child who is being victimized, the people who love them and others who see it.

The ones doing the bullying are damaged, too.

When adults fail to protect children, it doesn’t just work itself out.

The cycle continues when broken children become damaged adults.

The Belgian film is in French and has English subtitles.

Issues addressed in the movie are universal to children around the world, so it is relevant to those not living in Belgium, too.

Playground is not rated and the story is told from child’s perspective, but is best for adults.

If you have a child or teen who you think may benefit from seeing the movie, I’d recommend that you watch it alone first to see if you still believe it is appropriate.

The movie can and should impact the behavior of adults in regards to bullying and taking a more active role in protecting children.

Synopsis

The everyday reality of grade school is seen from a child’s-eye-view as an obstacle course of degradation and abuse.

Following 7-year-old Nora and her big brother Abel, we see Nora struggling to fit in before finding her place on the schoolyard.

One day, she notices Abel being bullied by other kids, and though she rushes to protect him by warning their father, Abel forces her to remain silent, while he endures more humiliation and harassment by his peers.

Transposing the gritty realism of such filmmakers as Jacques Audiard and the Dardennes Brothers to the inner world of kids, Wandel crafts an empathetic and visceral portrait of the cruelty of children, and the failure of adults to protect them.
