How to Make Rainbow Bear Earrings
It’s easy to make a pair of rainbow bear earrings with simple supplies, even if this if your first time making DIY jewelry.
The beaded hoop earrings are made with colorful heishi beads and resin gummy bear charms.
This is a great craft for pride or St. Patrick’s Day, but really can be good anytime of the year.
It’s fun to make jewelry that you can wear or to gift the earrings to someone else who will enjoy wearing them.
Rainbow Colors
Are you familiar with ROYGBIV?
This acronym is how many of us learned the proper order for the colors in a rainbow.
- Red
- Orange
- Yellow
- Green
- Blue
- Indigo
- Violet
These colors are all pretty and they are even more beautiful when they are together in a rainbow.
Bear Charms
These little gummy bear charms are so cute!
The three dimensional resin bear charms look cute from every direction.
They are made from resin and have loops attached, so they are easy to add to your jewelry crafts.
They look like multicolored gummy bears, but they are to look at and not to eat.
I used red bears, but you can use another color if you’d like.
Colorful Polymer Clay Heishi Beads
Small, flat heishi beads look great for homemade jewelry, so I have a big supply in assorted colors in my craft stash.
Traditional heishi (pronounced hee-shee) beads are formed from a clay made from ground up shell or stone powder.
Today the term is used for a variety of flat disc shaped beads.
The most common type of heishi beads used for DIY jewelry crafts are made from polymer clay and come in a wide variety of colors.
These beads are lightweight, so they are a good choice for making jewelry that is comfortable to wear.
They can be purchased as strands of beads, packages of loose beads and boxed jewelry making kits with beads organized by color.
Typical size of the beads is 6mm wide by 1mm thick with a hole that is 2mm in diameter.
Beads are readily available, so you can easily get rainbow colors just like the ones I used.
Hoop Earrings for Jewelry Making
Cute hoops are fun to wear and easy to work with, when you are making handmade jewelry.
Earring beading hoops are readily available in a variety of sizes and finishes at very reasonable prices.
You can get a package that includes all the same size and shape hoops or an assorted multipack that you can use to make a lot of fun hoop earrings.
A pack of hoops for making many pair of earrings is often less expensive than a single pair of fashion earrings at a discount store.
For this pair of rainbow beaded bear earrings I used round 1.2″ silver tone hoops, since that is a good size for me and many others – not too big and not too small.
You are welcome to use whatever size works for you.
If you are using bigger hoops, you may want to add more heishi beads than I did for the 1.2″ hoops.
Polymer clay beads are light, but if you are adding more than I did make sure the earrings will still be comfortable for you.
If you want to use smaller hoops, that’s fine, too.
Jump Rings
The small open circle metal findings used to connect jewelry components are called jump rings.
They are positioned between the charm and the hoop to keep it hanging freely and dangling at a nice angle.
If this is your first time making jewelry at home, you can pick up an inexpensive package of jump rings to use now and on future DIY projects.
The small rings have an opening that easily opens up with pliers and then can be closed again when your jewelry components are in place.
They come in different sizes and in different types of metal.
I find it handy to keep assorted sizes of gold and silver jump rings available for jewelry making projects at home.
You can use jump rings to match the other jewelry findings you are using or you can mix and match, if you’d like.
Pliers
Pliers are a helpful tool to have for jewelry making.
Needle nose pliers are handy to open up jump rings and attach your jewelry components together.
I find it easiest to use pliers with a short pointed tip, but you may like a longer tip or even a curved (hooked) tip.
You can use regular household needle nose pliers, if you already have them on hand.
Or you can get needle nose jewelry pliers with comfortable grips to keep with your other DIY jewelry tools and supplies.
