Sea Life Paper Craft: Blue Whale

printable whale paper craft

Make this cute Free Printable Blue Whale Craft with your kids for some fantastic under-the-sea fun while learning!

This simple paper craft is a wonderful way to bring a piece of the ocean into your home.

Blue whales are fascinating creatures, growing to be about 80 feet long and capable of living for 80 or more years in the wild.

The activity is great to make just for fun, or you can combine it with a homeschool or classroom lesson on ocean life or marine biology.

Little kids will need some help with the cutting, but bigger ones may be able to complete this craft all by themselves!

Gathering Supplies: Paper and Templates 🐳

This printable craft requires only basic supplies that you likely already have on hand for a fun afternoon activity.

Required Supplies

  • Free PDF Templates: The template includes the pieces for the blue whale and the bubbles. (see links below)
  • Paper: Construction Paper or Cardstock is recommended in colors such as Dark Blue, Light Blue, and White (check the template for specific color instructions).
  • Tools: Glue and sharp Scissors.

Optional: Creating a Watercolor Background 🎨

To really make your whale craft stand out, the post suggests mounting it to a beautiful, hand-painted watercolor background.

  • Additional Supplies: White Watercolor Paper, Watercolor Paint (shades of blue), and a Paint Brush.
  • Process: Cover your table with a protective surface. Paint the watercolor paper with various shades of blue to mimic the ocean. Allow the background to dry completely before gluing your finished whale onto it.

Simple Steps for Assembly and Display 🌊

The core of this craft is a simple cut-and-paste process, making it very accessible for various ages.

  1. Download & Print: Download the free printable templates for the whale and the bubbles. Print the templates using the recommended paper colors.
  2. Cut Pieces: Carefully cut out all the pieces. The template often includes extras, so you may have enough pieces to make a second whale!
  3. Assemble the Whale: Assemble the whale body and glue the pieces together according to the template image.
  4. Mount: Glue the finished paper whale onto a piece of contrasting cardstock OR onto your freshly painted and dried watercolor background.
