If you love a competitive word game, this free printable is the perfect seasonal version, but having the original board game is a fantastic way to enjoy this fast-paced word fun all year long!

How Santa’s Scattergories Works

  • The Letters: Instead of rolling a multi-sided die to get a random letter, you use the five letters in the name S-A-N-T-A.
  • The Categories: The printable provides ten fun Christmas-themed categories (like a Christmas movie, food or decoration).
  • The Goal: For each letter (S, A, N, T, A), players must write a unique word or phrase that fits the category.

Timing the Game

  • Set the Timer: Set a timer for 2 or 3 minutes per letter column. A shorter time (2 minutes) increases the pressure and the fun!
  • Adjust for Age: If you are playing with younger children, you can set the timer longer (4 minutes) or allow them to pair up with an adult for help.

Scoring the Points

  • Uniqueness is Key: A word is only worth a point if no other player wrote the exact same word. For example, if two people write “Angel” for the letter A, both are crossed out and neither player gets a point.
  • Bonus Points: Proper nouns (like “Santa Claus”) usually count as one answer, but unique, long answers (like “Elf on the Shelf”) often make for fun discussions.
  • Winning: The person who racks up the most unique points across all the categories and columns wins!
