How to Make Rainbow Wood Earrings

diy wood painted earrings

Make your own unique rainbow painted earrings with wood earring blanks, dimensional paint and basic jewelry making supplies.

This DIY jewelry craft is fun to make and it’s even more fun to say “I made them myself.” when people compliment you on your earrings.

The squeeze bottles of paint are easy to use without making a mess.

And it is simple to put the earrings together with jewelry pliers after the paint has dried.

Make yours like mine or come up with a different paint design, if you’d like.

Unfinished Wood Earring Blanks

Earrings made out of wood? Yes!

The wood is lightweight, so the earrings are comfortable to wear and they look fantastic.

Crafting with unfinished wood is easy and you can get great results.

Precut wood is available in a variety of shapes and sizes for a wide range of craft projects, including jewelry making.

Earring blanks are usually sold in sets that include wood pieces and jewelry findings, so they are ready to use.

My set had 3 different wood shapes, earring hooks and jump rings.

You can make yours with the same shape as mine or choose another shape for the rainbow wood earrings.

Dimensional Tulip Paints

These earrings were painted with shiny Tulip paint in gorgeous rainbow colors that look wet even after the paint has dried.

Tulip is my go to brand for paint and other colorful craft supplies.

For these earrings I used paints from the Rainbow & Neon Dimensional Fabric Paint Pack.

The paints are good for using on fabric, of course.

However, they also work very well on wood and other surfaces, too.

The paints have screw on lids and a pointed tip that makes it easy to apply paint directly to the wood.

You won’t need a paint brush, since you can just squeeze the paint onto your earrings.

If you are careful, this can be a virtually mess free paint project.

Rainbow Colors

Are you familiar with ROYGBIV?

This acronym is how many of us learned the proper order for the colors in a rainbow.

  • Red
  • Orange
  • Yellow
  • Green
  • Blue
  • Indigo
  • Violet

These colors are all pretty and they are even more beautiful when they are together in a real life rainbow or when used in a rainbow craft.

Earwires

There are a lot of options, when it comes to choosing earwires for jewelry making.

The first time I bought ear hooks for making my own jewelry, I was surprised at how inexpensive it is to get a multipack.

A whole lot of ear hooks can cost less than a single pair of fashion earrings at a discount store.

The earwires can be called, among other things, ear hooks, fish hooks, French hooks or shepherd hooks and are readily available.

Two main considerations are their appearance and comfort, so choose the type that you find attractive and comfortable.

Mine are ‘silver tone’ metal, since my ears are not particular about metal types.

If you need sterling silver or 14k gold, they are still very reasonably priced.

Jump Rings

The small open circle metal findings used to connect jewelry components are called jump rings.

They are positioned between the charm and the hoop to keep it hanging freely and dangling at a nice angle.

If this is your first time making jewelry at home, you can pick up an inexpensive package of jump rings to use now and on future DIY projects.

The small rings have an opening that easily opens up with pliers and then can be closed again when your jewelry components are in place.

They come in different sizes and in different types of metal.

I find it handy to keep assorted sizes of gold and silver jump rings available for jewelry making projects at home.

You can use jump rings to match the other jewelry findings you are using or you can mix and match, if you’d like.

Jewelry Pliers

Needle nose pliers are a helpful tool to have for jewelry making.

Jewelry pliers are handy to open up jump rings and attach your jewelry components together.

I find it easiest to use pliers with a short pointed tip, but you may like a longer tip or even a curved (hooked) tip.

You can use regular household needle nose pliers, if you already have them in a toolbox or in that junk drawer in your kitchen.

Or you can get needle nose jewelry pliers with comfortable grips to keep with your other DIY jewelry tools and supplies.

Where to Buy Jewelry Supplies Online

  1. AliExpress has a huge selection of jewelry making and craft supplies at super low prices – incredibly low prices. Plan ahead when you order, since shipping can take longer than US based companies.
  2. Amazon also has a good selection of supplies and shipping can be very fast.

You can get the earring supplies for this DIY project at either of those online stores.

Tulip paints are available on Amazon.

Instructions

1) Gather up your supplies and make a basic plan for how you want to paint your earrings. Do yours just like mine or come up with your own design. Arrange the paint bottles in rainbow order, so you’ll be ready to get the paint in the right place – red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet.

2) To follow my design start with the green paint. Squeeze out some little dots of green paint at the center of the bottom of the earrings.

3) Work out from the green section and repeat for the other colors. Be mindful of the placement, so you will have room for each color in the rainbow.

4) Let the paint thoroughly dry. When the weather is hot and dry, the paint will dry more quickly, When it is cold or the weather is wet, it can take longer for the paint to dry.

5) When the paint is completely dry, use the jewelry pliers to open up a jump ring and slip it through both through the hole in the painted wood and the loop on the ear hook. Pay attention to the direction of the wood piece, so that the painted side faces forward when you are wearing the earrings.

6) Use the pliers to squeeze the jump ring closed, so your components are securely attached and won’t come apart.

7) Repeat for the second earring.

8) Have fun wearing your colorful rainbow painted earrings!
